National Guard Bureau chief visits Northern Lightning
Lt. Col. Ben Gerds briefs distinguished visitors — including Gen. Joseph Lengyel, chief of the National Guard Bureau; U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin; and U.S. Rep. Ron Kind — during a May 5 visit to Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center to observe Northern Lightning, an annual counterland training exercise that began May 1 and will end May 12. The exercise will involve aircraft and personnel from multiple active duty Air Force, National Guard and Navy. Northern Lightning is one of seven Air National Guard joint accredited exercises held at a Combat Readiness Training Center. The two-week long exercise will provide participating units a tactical level, joint training environment emphasizing user-defined objectives.
